Sons and Daughters

Memory Verse:  "But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship."  Galatians 4:4-5
Scripture Reading: Galatians 4:1-11_
Picture
"One of the tragedies of legalism is that it gives the appearance of spiritual maturity when, in reality, it leads the believer back into a 'second childhood' of Christian experience." (Wiersbe)

1.  Law Keeping Christians are immature like children and slaves! Verses 1-3
  • While under age:
          a.  No different than a slave
          b.  Owns the entire estate but can’t enjoy it
  • Subject to:
          a.  Guardians: A person in charge of minor children
          b. Trustees: A person in charge of the administration of a household
          c.  Until the Father says the time is up! Here this is consistent with Roman customs of granting adulthood to boy at                        ages varying from 14-17 depending upon the circumstances.
  • Before Jesus came, all people were like immature children in their relationship to God!
  • Law was a tutor: Galatians 3:24, i.e. a guardian and guide of boys.
  • Elemental things were our master: verse 3
2.  In Christ, we are mature! verse 4-5
  • The natural laws and the OT Law together have been replaced in the life of the Christian.
  • The time for this transition is according to the Heavenly Father in the Divine plan.
  • Fullness of time: When God’s timing had been achieved. At the right time!
  • Reminiscent of the Birth of Jesus narrative in Luke 2:6 NIV - "While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,"
  • God sent His Son: Divine timing, Divine planning, Divine power, Divine presence
  • Born of a woman, born under the Law:
  • To redeem: Divine Purpose, to purchase out from under the Law those who are under it and who are unable to redeem themselves.
  • That we might receive adoption to sonship:
3.  Sonship is the Pleasure and Privilege of the New Relationship to God: verses 6-11
  • Because you are his sons!
  • The Slavery Situation Has ended!
          a.  Not a slave but a child!
          b.  Since a child then an heir!
          c.  Don’t go back to the weak things that enslaved you in your past life!
          d.  Going back would be a waste of God’s work and the work of the ministry!

SO WHAT?
  • Thank God for His Spirit of adoption!
  • Commit to know Him in a mature Parent/Child relationship .
  • Ask for Him to show you any legalism and beggarly ideas that are creeping into your life.

  • We inherit the promise through Jesus.
  • The prior promise takes precedence!
  • The promise is received by faith!
2.  The Law was a guardian! Verses 19-25
  • The Law was given for a period of time!
  • The Law was given for a purpose!

Memory Verse:  “He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”  Galatians 3:14Scripture Reading:  Galatians 3:1-14

Picture

Christians live as recipients of the promise God made to Abraham and the evidence of this is the Holy Spirit working in our lives!

1.  Christians live & work through the indwelling Holy Spirit of God! Verses 1-5
  • It is possible to loose focus on Jesus and begin to live in the power of our own works of Law! This diminishes Jesus work in us!
  • God’s presence and power are through faith in Him, not our works of Law!
2.  Christians are recipients of the blessing of God (the Holy Spirit) which makes us “Children of Abraham” by faith in Jesus! Verses 6-9
  • Scripture tells of God’s plan to bless the nations through Abraham!
  • Abraham’s spiritual life is the model for justification by faith!
  • The faith of Abraham!  Genesis 15:6 & 12:3; 18:18; 22:18
  • True belief is required! James 2:19
  • Abraham’s children are all those who have faith in Jesus, not just the Jews by blood! Romans 1:16
  • All of Abraham’s children by faith receive the blessing (the Holy Spirit)! Romans 8:1-17
3.  Christians have a changed relationship with the Law because of Jesus’ ministry through the cross! Vs. 10-14
  • The Law brings a curse to all who are under it!
  • No one under this curse is justified through their Law keeping!
  • Jesus became a curse for us to redeem us from the Law’s curse on us!
  • Jesus  redeemed us for two reasons!
  • The blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus
  • So that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
SO WHAT?
  • Thank God for giving you the blessing of Abraham though faith in Jesus!
  • If you are not a believer, Repent from your life of sin and turn by faith to Jesus today and receive his promises!
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and show you any unclean way! Ask Him to show you legalism that may have taken hold! Repent of any known sin!

Christ In Me

Memory Verse:  “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

Scripture Reading:
Galatians 2:15-21
Picture
The solution to hypocrisy and broken fellowship within the church is faith in Jesus Christ expressed as “being crucified” with him and Him living in you!

1.  Unified in justification by faith! Verse 15-16
  • Unified in the problem of sin!
  • Unified in the insufficiency of our works!
  • Unified in our means of justification!
2.  Unified in our new direction of life! Verses 17-19
  • Together In Christ!
  • Together among sinners without living in sin!
  • Together living for God and dead to the Law.
3.  Unified by Christ in Us! Verse 20
  • I have been crucified with Christ
  • I no longer live, but Christ lives in me
  • The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God.
          a.  Loved me
          b.  Gave himself for me!

4.  Unified by a life of grace! Verse 21
  • No other life in Christ!
  • Any other attempt devalues Jesus’ love and death!
  • Law is not the answer.
  • Don’t set aside grace!

SO WHAT?
  • Have you set aside grace to live by Law?
  • Have you been justified by faith in Jesus?
  • How doe being crucified with Christ change your view of material things?
