The Disciples’ Disciplines!

1/26/2015

Scripture Reading:  Mark 1:10-14

Memory Verse:
"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Hebrews 12:11

1.  Decision & Declaration
  • There is a place and time of beginning in every journey!
  • Baptism sets up a starting marker! A spiritual birth certificate!
  • Baptism allows for a two way affirmation, a call and response! We hear Jesus call, we respond, and then God, who called us in Christ Jesus, responds to our response!
2.  Deliberate Obedience in the Spirit: Luke 4:1-14
  • Spiritual Testing:
         1)  Testing can be our proving or our undoing!
         2)  God is supremely powerful in the test! He is on your side!
         3)  Spiritual testing is primarily about your identity and responsibility as a son or daughter of God! (Priorities, Power,                   Privilege)
         4)  Trials and testing are never over. They return at the right time!
         5)  Scripture is your ally! Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, 6:13, 6:16
         6)  Discernment is critical as the devil quotes Scripture as well! Psalm 91:11-12. Proper application of the Bible is the               issue!
         7)  Victorious disciples approach life and ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit!
  • Mission of the Kingdom: Mark 1:14-15
         1)  The mission makes the discipline worth it!

SO WHAT?
  • Have you clearly marked the beginning of your journey with Jesus? Be baptized!
  • Have you deliberately committed yourself to prepare for success in spiritual tests?
  • Have you yielded completely to letting the mission of the Kingdom be your life mission?

1/12/2015

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35
Picture
A disciple follows Jesus in ways that cause him to love others who follow Jesus!

1.  Love other disciples! John 13:34-35
  • Disciples are commanded to love one another!
  • Disciples love one another as Jesus loves them!
  • This proves we are Jesus disciple!

2.  Lift with other disciples!
  • Disciples accomplished more together than alone! Mark 2:3 Each disciple is mutually interdependent upon other disciples. Eph 4:15-16
  • Disciples are in a Partnership! Philippians 1:5, Philemon 1:6
3.  Learn with other disciples!
  • Jesus taught the disciples!
         a.  Accurately: John 8:28
         b.  Openly, in public! John 18:20
         c.  Corporately, in groups! Mark 10:1
         d.  Specifically, in small groups! Mark 3:9
         e.  Beneficially: Acts 20:20
  • Disciples teach others!
         a.  Accountable! Mark 6:30
         b.  Accurate! Acts 18:25
         c.  Cause of Joy! 3 John 1:4
         d.  Put on a new way of living! Ephesians 4:20-24
4.  Be Last among other disciples! Mark 10:31-45
  • Positions of leadership are sovereignly appointed, not politically appropriated!
  • Greatness is the possession of anyone who serves others!
  • We serve for the sake of The Name!
  • Show hospitality so that we may work together for the truth! 3 John 1:5-8

Scripture Reading:  Mark 1:14-34

Memory Verse:  “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Mark 1:17-18
Picture
1.  Urgent! Now is the time for God to rule your life!
  • The time is full!
  • The Kingdom is now!
  • The news is good!

2.
Dependent! You live under the rule of the Kingdom of God through Jesus Christ!
  • Repent!
         1)  Change your mind about your self-willed life!
         2)  Turn away from the current path of life! Turn to Jesus!
  • Believe the Good News!
         1)  Kingdom is available now!
         2)  Jesus is the way!

3.  Devotion! You demonstrate your belief by actually following Jesus! Verses 18, 20
  • Come! In order to come with him, they must leave behind the thing they were already doing!
  • Follow Me! The invitation involved a command! They were not only to leave and take a new direction. They entered a new relationship! Their direction was now determined by another, not themselves! Jesus was in control!
  • Devote yourselves to serve others! Their lives become focused on people as a purpose for life! Following Jesus was the same as serving others!

4.  Service! You must recognize the authority of the Master or you will fail!
  • Jesus had the authority to gather disciples! Verses 16-20
  • Jesus had authority to teach in the synagogue! Verses 21-22
  • Jesus had the authority to cast out impure spirits! Verses 23-27
  • Jesus had the authority to heal disease! Verses 28-34

5.  Community! You are not alone. Jesus keeps calling others to follow Him! 2:2, 4, 13-15
  • It’s not just about you!
  • You are part of something huge!
  • You have partners for the journey!
  • Some may hinder your efforts, others will help!
