Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

Sermon Scripture:  Luke 19:1-10

1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Judges 6:12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”

Sermon Scripture:  Judges 2:16-19  (NIV)

16 Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands. 18 Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. 19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

Sermon Scripture:  John 4:39-42 (NIV)

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.  42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

Sermon Scripture:  2 Timothy 4:6-22

To be faithful we must:

1.  Plan with the end in mind
2.  Gather with the fellowship of the faithful around the cross as often as we can
3.  Prepare for opposition

Psalm 19

For the director of music. A psalm of David.
  1. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
  2. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
  3. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
  4. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.  In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
  5. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
  6. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.
  7. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.  The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
  8. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.  The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
  9. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.  The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.
  10. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.
  11. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
  12. But who can discern their own errors?  Forgive my hidden faults.
  13. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me.  Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.
  14. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Sermon Scripture:  James 4:1-10

1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:  “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Sermon Scripture:  Luke 17:11-19
Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.
17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?”19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Sermon Scripture:   Luke 9:19-31
Picture
"For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?"  Luke 9:24-25

Lazarus and the Rich Man are two starkly contrasted descriptions of the ways people live their lives.
Man
  • Rich
  • Dressed in Purple & Fine Linen
  • Feasted Everyday
  • Lived behind walls and a gate
  • Moved in and out past Lazarus regularly
  • Ignoring Lazarus

Lazarus
  • Poor
  • Covered with sores
  • Longed for table crumbs
  • Lived outside the gate
  • Carried by others to a place of potential charity
  • Dogs lick his sores
  • Watching the Rich Man

Rich Man
  • Death is shocking for he was healthy
  • Attended by who?
  • To be in Hades (the home of the wicked dead until the judgment)
Lazarus
  • Dies unsurprisingly for he was sick
  • Attend by the angels
  • To be with Abraham

Rich Man
  • Torment of Fire
  • Torment of Separation
  • Torment of a need that cannot be met
  • Torment of the knowledge that cannot be acted upon
  • Unchanged attitude toward Lazarus: Send Lazarus
  • The Account is made right
  • No faith in the sufficiency of God’s revelation
Lazarus
  • Comforted
  • In fellowship with Abraham
  • No need unmet
  • No regret needing to be addressed/no knowledge of the pain of others
  • No work left undone
  • The Account is made right
  • No more revelation will be made than what has been made

So What?
  • Have you received the gracious gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord?
  • What stands in your way of being faithful to God? Poverty is no excuse, wealth is no help!
