Scripture Reading:  Matthew 21:1-14
Memory Verse: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you
will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24
Picture
Sermon Notes:

God owns everything and I am His steward. My financial priorities should flow from the desires of my Master!

1.  Donkeys, coats, cheers, trees, and crowds, ALL belong to Jesus! 21:1-22
  • He describes it! V. 2
  • He deserves it! V. 3
  • He uses it!
  • He needs it? V. 3
  • He declares it! V. 12-13
  • He defends it! V. 16
  • He dramatizes it! V. 19-20
  • He defines it! V. 21-22
2.  By What Authority/who gave you this authority? 21:23-27
  • Jesus is challenged over it!
  • Jesus challenges back!
  • The issue of authority is settled in the heart of the hearer!
  • The sincerity and power of Jesus’ works, settles the issue of the source of His authority in our lives. If we trust his heart for us, then we can follow his commands.
3. Two parables about authority!
  • Two sons: 21:28-32
         1)  Which is the “good” son?
         2)  The one who repented and obeyed!
  • One Vineyard: 21:33-46
         1)  Who are the “good” tenants?
         2)  Those who will give to the owner what belongs to him at harvest!

Summary
  1. Donkeys, coats, cheers, trees, and crowds, ALL belong to Jesus! 21:1-22
  2. By What Authority and who gave you this authority? 21:23-27
  3. Two parables about authority!

So What?

  • Who is the object of my affection?
  • Who is in control of my decisions, who is my authority?
  • How am I honoring God with my life?
  • What fruit am I giving to him in obedience to Jesus

Does God Care About Money?

Scripture:   Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:19-21
Picture
God uses money as a means of revealing the true priorities of our hearts!

1.  Substitute for the things we value! Matthew 13:44,
  • Your money shows your values!
  • Do we value God enough to spend our money on Him or His priorities?

2.  Shows out Transformation! Luke19:8
  • When God changes our hearts, He changes the way we use money!
  • How is God’s work in your life shown through your use of money?

3.  Signifies our Service and our Master: Matthew 6:24-25
  • Everyone has one true Master, You cannot serve God and money!
  • You love and are devoted to one!
  • You hate and despise the other!
  • Life is more than food, body, and clothes! So don’t worry about it!

4.  Smart (Spiritually Intelligent) Builder: 1 Corinthians 3:10
  • Build on Christ!
  • Build for Christ!
  • Build for Heaven!
  • Give your material wealth to help meet physical and spiritual needs now!

Acts 2:40-47

Matt. 28:19-20  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  • Sunday School is the only group challenged to fulfill all  the functions

  • It is the one place that every member of the church has an opportunity  to serve

Purpose Statement: Why?
  • Serves as a verbal picture that can be used as a:
  • Compass to see we are going in the right direction
  • Lens to view what we are doing discerning the good from the best
  • Measure to evaluate how we are doing
  • If not properly communicated we have no direction
  • Aim at nothing hit every time
