The Fishing Is Good, Yet We Do Not Fish!

Scripture Reading:  “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.  Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’?  I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.  Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.  I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”  John 4:34-38
We know from Scripture that we are commanded to FISH
  • Jesus’ 1st command:  Mark 1:17
  • His last command:  Acts 1:8
  • We have been sent:  John 20:21
  • The Great Commission:  Matthew 28:18-20

Yet, we do not FISH!

We also know from Scripture that there are plenty of FISH - John 4:34-38
  • V34: It’s food or nourishment for us because we are doing His will and His work
  • V35: There are many fish and they are BITING!
  • V36-38: We have the benefits of each other’s labor; we work together; we receive wages!!
  • It’ God that catches the fish: 1 Cor 3:7

YET, we do not FISH!

We are told in Scripture to prepare ourselves and others to fish:

1.  Ourselves: 2 Tim 2:15
  • As one approved; not ashamed.
  • Correctly handling the Word

2.  Others: 2 Tim 4:1-5
  • Paul urges us to preach the Word; be prepared
  • Patiently correct, rebuke and encourage YOUR people with good teaching
  • Keep a clear mind , don’t be afraid to suffer for the Lord!
  • Work at telling others the Good News!
  • Fully carry out the ministry God has given you!

YET WE DO NOT FISH! – Why is this; what is our problem?
  1. Mark 12:29-31
  2. John 13:34-35
  3. 2 Tim 4:10
  4. Like Demas, we have a LOVE PROBLEM! How does Jesus say that we show love to Him?  John 14:15,21; John 13:35

How do we solve our LOVE Problem?
  • We repent and seek His Face – He deserves to be preeminent in our lives. Col 1:18
  • Ask Him to work on your heart. Deut 30:6
  • We seek First His Kingdom – Mat 6:33
  • We OBEY immediately and completely!  John 14:15

Now let us PREPARE to FISH!
  • Learn a basic method--you are studying several good methods, but have one basic method that you use. It frees you up to listen and talk, instead of worrying about what to say next.
  • It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers--It is okay to say, “I don’t know.”
  • Fear is normal--it is an experience that everyone deals with. The Apostle Paul even asked for prayer for boldness (If no fear, you are probably witnessing in the flesh). Remember that you are not alone – Jesus is with you with power, protection and wisdom.  The Holy Spirit is also at work in the heart of the other person.
  • Remember that God does the saving – He gives the increase
  • Learn by going with someone who regularly shares Jesus
  • Always Pray specifically for the lost BEFORE (and during, yes during) you share; evangelism without prayer is presumption!
  • Lead by example--people are watching what you do, and tend to pay more attention to what you do than what you say.

Share the GOSPEL
(from Dare2Share):
  • God created us to be with him.
  • Our sin separates us from God.
  • Sins cannot be removed by good deeds.
  • Paying the price for sin, Jesus died and rose again.
  • Everyone who trusts in him alone has eternal life.
  • Life that’s eternal means we will be with Jesus forever.

Are you ready to commit to being obedient?  They let’s start fishing; they are biting in our area!

Scripture Reading:  Acts 1:6-11

Memory Verse:  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8
Picture
God has equipped the church with His Holy Spirit to make disciples!

1.  You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you! Acts 1:8
  • You received this power when you were saved! Romans 8:14-16
  • You received this power along with all other saved people!
  • You receive this power to express your “sonship” in Jesus!
  • The Holy Spirit never leaves you! Matthew 28:20
  • The Holy Spirit will tell you what to say in unexpected situations! Don’t worry! Luke 12:11-12
  • The Holy Spirit will arrange opportunity for you to share Jesus! Colossians 4:13
  • The Holy Spirit equips us to withstand opposition. 1 Corinthians 16:9
2.  You will be witness of Jesus Christ!
  • As the CHURCH: Matthew 16:18
  • As Jesus’ Body: 1 Corinthians 12:27
  • With your gifts! Ephesians 4:11-12
  • With your good works (salt and light)! Matthew 5:16
3.  You will tell about Him across the earth!
  • Avoid being intellectually sidetracked! Example: Searching for times and dates
  • Avoid being experientially sidetracked! Example: Staying too long in places that should be passed through!
  • Accept responsibility for your sphere of influence! Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria?
SO WHAT?
  • Get tell!
  • Look for opportunity!
  • Don’t worry!
  • Rely on the Holy Spirit!

Share Jesus Using Your Personal Testimony

Salvation is the turning point of our life when we move from rebellion against God into a right relationship with God through faith in the gospel of Jesus.

Picture
1.  I love to tell MY story!!!! Philippians 3:12.

2.  My life before Jesus! Acts 7:58; 8:1, 3; 9:2; Phil. 3:5-6
  • Every life is full of accomplishments and failures!
  • Every person needs Jesus!
3. My introduction to Jesus! Romans 10:14-15, 17
  • Romans 10:14-15:  How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
  • Romans 10:17:  Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ
4.  My turning Point!
  • Philippians 3:8:  I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.
5.  My walk with Jesus!
  • There is a point to the turn!
  • There is a destination to the journey!
  • There is a goal/prize to be won!
SO WHAT?
  • Does your story have a turning point?
  • What story does your life tell right now?
  • Are you telling your story?

Share Jesus Using the Power of the Gospel

Scripture Reading: Romans 1:13-16, Matthew 28:16-20, Acts 1:8

Picture
The power that enables a Christian to witness comes from God and not from us.
The power of the gospel is not:
  • Man’s Wisdom: 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, 1 Corinthians 2:13
  • Emotional Manipulation: Matthew 7:15, 24:4, 16:18
  • Materialistic Marketing: Acts 3:6
1.  Jesus’ Cross (gospel is power of God unto Salvation),  Romans 1:13-16
  • Aware, obligated, eager, unashamed!
  • Legal Declaration of Righteousness, Ransom Payment from sins’ bondage, Satisfactory Sacrifice for Sin’s guilt! Romans 3:24-25
2.  Jesus’ Command (Great Commission): Matthew 28:16-20
  • Respond to Authority: Worship and Obey
  • Make disciples: go, baptizing, teach
  • Receive help: Go to the end, Go with Jesus
3.  Jesus’ Constant Help (you will receive power from the Holy Spirit): Acts 1:8
  • You will receive power!
  • Power comes through the Holy Spirit!
  • Holy Spirit makes you a witness!
SO WHAT?
  • Depend on Him in sharing Him!
  • Develop an obedient heart that desires to share Jesus!
  • Declare the powerful message of the Cross of Jesus!
