Sermon Scripture: Philippians 2:5-11

1. The Ministry of Jesus is the source of our Spiritual Praise. Verses 5b-11

Jesus did not use His nature for His own advantage.

a) Jesus Is God
b) Jesus did not hold onto his right to be considered equal with God

Jesus emptied himself

a) By taking the nature of a bond-servant,
b) Being made in human likeness
c) Being found in appearance as a man
d) Humbled himself by obedience to death on a cross

God exalted Jesus to the highest place

a) Gave Jesus a name above every name
b) All will bow to his name
c) All will acknowledge with their voice that Jesus is Lord!
d) Jesus’ exaltation glorifies God
2. The Mindset of Jesus is the model for Spiritual Practices. Verses 3-5a

Doing nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit
Humbly consider others above yourself
Look after the interests of others not yourself

3. The Maturity of Jesus is the motivation our Spiritual Progress! Verses 1-2

The longer we live in Christ, the more we will act like Christ!
Since these things exist!

a) Encouragement from being united with Christ
b) Comfort from his love
c) Common sharing in the Spirit
d) Tenderness
e) Compassion

The let these things come to be! Make my joy complete

a) Be like-minded
b) Have same love
c) Be one in spirit and mind
SO WHAT?

Check your progress!
Check your attitude toward self and others!
Check your praise!

Sermon Scripture: James 4:7-17

1. God’s grace is received by those arranged under His command. God is your Commander! Verse 7

Arrange yourself under God in order not to be arranged against God
To whom or to what do you yield? How do you yield to God?
Oppose the slanderer, “Devil”: He will flee for his life! Set yourself firmly against the one who is against God and God’s children!
What are you resisting the devil about?

2. God’s grace is received by those who accept Him as their close ally. God is your Comfort! Verse 8

Draw near to God: He will draw near to you.
What do you draw near to in order to find help in life? That is your true God!
How? True Religion, Working faith, Royal Law, Controlled tongue, True wisdom, victorious Character

3. God’s grace is received by those who will acknowledge and repent of sin. Psalm 24:4-5, God is your Cleansing! Verses 8-9

Clean your hands: Who? Sinners
Purify your heart: Who? Double minded, James 1:8
Be afflicted, mourn, weep over your sin: Psalm 126:5-6, 2 Corinthians 7:7-11
Do what is right! Isa 1:16-17

4. God’s grace is revealed in the exaltation of the humble: God is your Character! Verse 10

Humble yourself!
God will exalt you!

5. God’s grace sets the Spirit’s view on your sins before the sins of others! God is your Conviction! Verses 11-17

Allows you to avoid “The Sins of Insubordination”
Judgmental spirit: Bringing accusation against other people.
Presumptuous spirit: Planning based on selfish plans instead of God’s will.
Bragging spirit: Finding joy in empty talking
Apathetic spirit: Unwilling to act on the righteous commands of God.

So What?

Surrender to be made?
Sweetness to be renewed?
Sin to be sorrowed over?
Self to be humbled?
Step of obedience to be taken?

Psalm 126
A song of ascents.
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of[a] Zion,
    we were like those who dreamed.[b]
2 Our mouths were filled with laughter,
    our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
    “The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
    and we are filled with joy.
4 Restore our fortunes,[c] Lord,
    like streams in the Negev.
5 Those who sow with tears
    will reap with songs of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
    carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
    carrying sheaves with them.

Sermon Scripture: James 4:1-6

1. They lose the war within themselves! “We have met the Enemy and he is us!” Walt Kelly, Pogo Cartoonist:

The war with others arises from the war going on in our own lives
Unchecked desires destroy you and those around you!
You then murder! Matthew 5:21-22.

2. They improperly employ the weapon of prayer!

You do not have because: Prayer-less spiritual lives are embattles, empty, and loosing!
You do not ask! Practical atheism!
You ask and do not receive: Practical Paganism!

3. They make peace with the enemy and an enemy of God! Verses 4-5

You are adulterous! Jeremiah 3:8-9, Ezekiel 6:9, Ezekiel 16:32 Hosea 3:1
Friendship with the world! Matthew 6:24
Hostility toward God!
Will you ignore the purpose of Scripture?
God jealously longs, and desire the spirit in us to fellowship with himself

4. They need God’s offer of greater grace? Verse 6

How great? Greater than our sins! 1 Peter 5:5, Proverbs 3:34
God is in opposition to the proud!
Grace and pride are eternal enemies.
God gives grace to the humble!

So What?

Is this you: infighting, weaponless, low moral?
Accept the Spirit’s conviction!
Heed the correction of Scripture!
Seek to make peace with God through His grace!
Humble yourself before the Lord!
