"The Song of a Depressed Christian"

5/31/2020

Sermon Scripture:  Psalm 42-43
Picture
FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
  1. What causes God to seem far away at times? Who moved, God or you?
  2. How might this psalm help you in times when you wonder where God is?
  3. In dealing with his depression, this man freely cried (42:3), talked to himself (42:5, 11; 43:5), reminded himself of God’s nature (42:6, 8) and prayed honestly (42:9; 43:2). By comparison, how do you deal with depression? What from this man’s example might help you face times of spiritual dryness in your life?
  4. As we get closer to meeting again, how are you preparing yourself to worship God when you return?

Sermon Scripture:  Psalm 66
Picture
SERMON OUTLINE:
The psalmist gives four invitations for worship to the congregation and to the rest of the nations:
  1. Come and Praise (66:1-4)
  2. Come and See (66:5-12)
  3. Come and Sacrifice (66:13-15)
  4. Come and Hear (66:16-20)

FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
  1. Who does the psalmist call to worship in verses 1 and 4?
  2. Why is it important for people to “come and see” (v. 5) what God has done instead of just praising him for who he is?
  3. What does the exodus reveal about God? (v. 6)
  4. What could you say God has done for you lately?
  5. Have you ever “made a deal” with God? Did God do his part? What about your part?
  6. Do you feel God is testing you? How? Why?
  7. What sacrifices should you make this week for the Lord? What would be your equivalent to “bulls and goats?”

Sermon Scripture:  Psalm 95
Picture
SERMON OUTLINE:
I.  God’s people must praise him as the great king above all gods (1-7)
  • He saved us. (1-2)
  • He made us. (3-5)
  • He cares for us. (6-7)
II. God’s people must hear and obey God’s word rather than stubbornly refuse and fail to receive his              promises in full. (7b-11)
  • We must always be ready to obey the voice of the Lord. (7b)
  • We must not resist God’s word and fail to receive his full promise. (8-11)
FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
  1. How can you give praise to the Lord this morning? Choose one of the three things mentioned in the sermon and focus on it for a few moments (Saved us, Made us, Cares for us).
  2. How does it encourage you to know that the Maker of Heaven and earth is the same God who cares for you like a shepherd?
  3. Why does the psalmist give a warning at the end of the psalm? What are the people in danger of missing?
  4. In what way has God's word been calling you to obey recently?

II.  God has Given Special Revelation of His Nature in His Word (19:7-11) (The Perfect Word)
  • The Attributes of the Word (19:7-9)
  • An Appreciation for the Word (19:10-11)
  • The Application of the Word (19:12-14)
III.  We Must Respond to God’s Revelation by Praying for a Blameless Life (19:12-14)

  • Verse 13- We must pray for preservation from presumptuous sins.
  • Verse 14- We must pray for our words and thoughts to be acceptable to the Lord.
FAMILY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1.   What aspect of God's creation do you think clearly shows off his glory?
2.   Why do you think so many people miss God's glory when they look at the universe?
3.   Which of the six aspects of God's word (verses 7-9) stuck out to you? Why?
4.   Why is God's special revelation in his word greater than God's general revelation in his creation?
