“The Perfect High Priest – Part 3”

3/31/2014

Memory Verse: But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:14
As you continue to study about our Perfect High Priest, ask Him for understanding as you study - take time to focus on Him as He calls you to spiritual growth!

Review this Week’s MEMORY VERSE (He 5:14).  Meditate, Review! Train yourself!!

DISCUSS: What did I learn in the Sunday School lesson and the sermon about “Jesus makes us mature?”

Meditate upon (He 5:11-14; 6:1-3) using 2PROAPT (on the back or at the bottom if online).  Be still before Him and think about what you have just read. In your own words, summarize what the passages are saying about becoming mature.
  • How does the author contrast the actual spiritual condition of his readers with how it should be? (vs 11-14)
  • Compare this week’s passages with (Phil 3:12-16) and (Eph 4:13-14); taken together, what do they tell us of the path of a “normal” Christian life? How does your life compare with this pattern?
  • Are you passing on to other believers your knowledge of Christ and your experiences of Him?  If not, how can you begin?
Apply the Word
  • Does Jesus being your heavenly high priest have any real significance for your daily life?
  • If so, what aspects of His heavenly role are of value as you go through your day?
Respond in Prayer this week by praying (Col 1:9-12) back to the Lord for yourself and at least one other.

Intimacy with God: Your Quiet Time –2PROAPT

Two key elements in having intimacy with God are prayer and the Word.  We come to the Word of God not just to read it, but to understand what He is saying to us and to determine how He wants us to apply it to our lives; asking Him for the strength and will to apply it.  Finally, writing it down and sharing it with another so that they might also learn.

Study a short passage (couple of paragraphs) using an acrostic called: 2PROAPT.
  • Pray – Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the passage and give you understanding. Remember, your goal is to meet with Him, so spend time in Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication (ACTS) – the supplication is to understand the Word, to know Him and to enjoy Him!
  • Preview – Read the passage quickly; what’s the topic or theme? Did you notice anything in particular?
  • Read – Read the passage again more slowly.  Is God trying to tell you something?  Is there something you haven’t noticed before?
  • Observe – Read the passage again out loud.  Look at each word; each phrase; underline or mark key words; vary the emphasis you place on the words.  What is He saying to you; what is He asking you to do?  Paraphrase the passage in your own words.
  • Apply – Is there a command to obey; a sin to confess or an action to take?  How can you apply this scripture to your life?  Does He want you to do it now?
  • Pray – Pray that He would enable you to do what He has told you to do in applying the scripture. Memorize (Phil 2:13); stand upon its truth. Be still before Him, listen, and let the Word saturate your thoughts and your heart.
  • Tell – Write in your journal what He has revealed to you, then share with someone what you have learned. Don’t place your light under a basket (Mt 5:15). Remember to have a plan, a place, a purpose (to meet with Him), and finally – PERSEVERE, even when you don’t feel like it or don’t think you have the time, give God the “first fruits” of your day! Early mornings are wonderful in His presence; set your alarm clock 20 minutes earlier.

Memory Verse:  Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.  Hebrews 7:25
As you continue to study about our Perfect High Priest, ask Him for understanding as you study - take time to focus on Him as He intercedes for you.

Review this Week’s MEMORY VERSE (Heb 7:25).  Meditate, Review! Share your verse with a friend this week!

DISCUSS: What did I learn in the Sunday School lesson and the sermon about “Jesus makes us acceptable?”

Meditate upon (Heb 5:1-10; 7) using 2PROAPT (on the back or at the bottom if online).  Be still before Him and think about what you have just read. In your own words, summarize what the passages are saying about your High Priest.
  • In what sense did Jesus “learn” obedience through suffering; what was the result? (Heb 5:8-9;Mt 26:36-46)
  • How has the experience of suffering in your life affected your relationship with God?
  • Read the account of Melchizedek’s encounter with Abraham (Heb 7) in the context of (Ge 14); list at least 5 observations about Melchizedek; how is the priesthood of Christ similar? (Ps 110:4)
Apply the Word
  • Is there something that you believe God is calling you to do?  How are you responding to Him?
  • What is your attitude when you see others struggling with sin or dealing with a spiritual issue?
Respond in Prayer

Lord I trust you to fully and completely save me; help me to understand what that means. (Heb 7:25)

Memory Verse:  Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.  Hebrews 4:16
The priests of the Old Testament, with all their human weaknesses, were merely foreshadows of our Perfect High Priest. So, before you begin, ask Him for understanding as you study - take time to focus on Him as He intercedes for you.

Review this Week’s MEMORY VERSE (Heb 4:16).  Meditate, Review! Share your verse with a friend today!

DISCUSS: What did I learn in the Sunday School lesson and the sermon about “Approach the Throne?”

Meditate upon (Heb 4:14-16) using 2PROAPT (on the back or at the bottom if online).  Be still before Him and think about what you have just read. In your own words, summarize the message of this passage in light of (Vs 12-13).
  • In what ways was Jesus like us when He walked the earth? (v 15;Jn 4:6;Mt 21:18;Mk 14:34)
  • Why does it matter to us that Jesus shared fully in our humanity?
  • Why is it significant that Jesus “…did not sin”? (v15;7:26-27;9:14)
  • Since Jesus never sinned, was it possible for Him to know the full power of temptation? Why or why not?
Apply the Word
  • Why do you think the writer of Hebrews refers to the “throne” as the “throne of grace”?
  • What can you expect when you approach His throne? (v 16)
Respond in Prayer

Enter His presence with thanksgiving and praise “for His mercy is everlasting”. (Ps 100) NKJV

Memory Verse:  For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12
Any failure of faith will surely be known by Him and exposed by His Word. So, before you begin, ask Him for understanding and openness as you study - take time to focus on Him in praise and worship.

Review this Week’s MEMORY VERSE (Heb 4:12).  Meditate, Review! Ask someone to listen as you recite the verse.

DISCUSS: What did I learn in the Sunday School lesson and the sermon about “Living in Accountability?”

Meditate upon (Heb 4:12-13) using 2PROAPT (on the back or at the bottom if online).  Be still before Him and think about what you have just read. In your own words, summarize the passage.
  • In what way(s) is God’s Word “living” and “active”? (v 12; Isa 55:11; Heb 1:3,11:3)
  • How have you experienced God’s Word as “living” and “active” in your life?
  • What message is being conveyed by the metaphor “Sharper than any double-edged sword”? (Acts 2:37;Ps 139:1-12)
  • Why do people often try to conceal the truth? (Jn 3:19-21)
Apply the Word
  • Why does it matter that God sees and knows all about you? (2 Cor 5:10)
  • When you come to God in Bible study and prayer, how would you describe your attitude?
Respond in Prayer
  • Pray that God would examine your heart and mind, and give you a will to obey. (Ps 26:2,19:14)

“Entering God’s Rest”

3/2/2014

As we study the tragic example of Israel, we need to take heed because the promise to enter His rest still remains. So, before you begin, ask Him for wisdom and guidance as you study - take time to focus on Him in worship and praise.

Review this Week’s MEMORY VERSE (Heb 4:9).  Hide the Word of God in your heart; Review; Meditate!

DISCUSS: What did I learn in the Sunday School lesson and the sermon about “Entering God’s Rest?”

Meditate upon (Heb 3:16-4:11) using 2PROAPT (on the back or at the bottom if online).  Be still before Him and think about what you have just read. In your own words, summarize the writer’s main ideas.
  • What do you think of when you hear the word “rest”?
  • To whom was the promise of a rest first given; who is it given to today?
  • What is God’s rest and how does one enter into it? (Vs 2-3)
  • What is meant by “rests from their works”; are you resting from your works? (v 10)
Apply the Word
  • Have you entered God’s rest; how do you know?
  • Share with someone what entering God’s rest means to you; and how they can enter in too!
Respond in Prayer

Pray that God would strengthen your faith and confidence in Him; He is your eternal Rock! (Is 26:4)
